Ibiza, they replanted Posidonia in Talamanca Fuente: medio ambiente

As reported, it has recently completed the second planting in the Bay of Santa Ponsa, Mallorca, and in the near future will be held in the bay of Talamanca, in Ibiza.
Red Electrica of Spain and the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (CSIC-UIB IMEDEA) have confirmed that they are still working on the experimental plantations of Posidonia from specimens collected and cultured in laboratory conditions. As reported, it has recently completed the second planting in the Bay of Santa Ponsa, Mallorca, and in the near future will be held in the bay of Talamanca, in Ibiza.
These plantations extend those in both locations in June 2015 and are the result of collaboration of these entities in a pioneering scientific project for the recovery of seagrass meadows, an ecosystem of high ecological value for the Mediterranean. Red Eléctrica and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), which is part of the IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB) signed in 2013 an agreement for research on cultivation under laboratory conditions and planting of Posidonia. The aim is to develop a methodology for the restoration of degraded grassland. Now, scientific and technical advances of this second performance work involves planting more than 700 pieces of plant collected during the winter copies uprooted by storms and germinated later in buckets in the Interpretation Centre Cabrera National Park and other submerged in the sea off the coast of Formentera. In both cases, the parameters for water, light and other conditions are monitored to determine the survival rate, before proceeding to the plantations in the sea. Subsequently, monitoring of new colonies and developments that have achieved survival rates of 60-80 percent on average at depths of 15-20 meters is performed.

Throughout this spring is expected to collect new seeds after cultivation, make a third planting throughout the summer. The aim of this initiative developed between Red Eléctrica and IMEDEA is the establishment of a methodology to determine the conditions of reproduction of Posidonia to ensure its viability and can be used in the future to accelerate the restoration of grasslands. This R + D + i is part of the strategic commitment of Red Eléctrica with excellence, sustainable development and protection of biodiversity and the environment. It is associated with the development of environmental protection measures included in the projects of underwater electrical interconnections Ibiza-Mallorca and Ibiza-Formentera, which unify the island's electrical system, and the link between Mallorca and the Peninsula, which connects the Balearic Islands with the system and European mainland electricity.
